The rise of mass protests against the Vietnam
War, beginning on major college campuses, was unprecedented in recent
history, and has come to be a core symbol of the "bad sixties" as
portrayed by the political Right. The backlash against images of the
social upheaval and antiwar activism helped Republicans win seven of ten
presidential elections from 1968 to 2004.
